If you’re working out 5–7 days a week and your waist hasn’t changed in months, hitting your health goals probably doesn’t mean cramming in another workout.
We talk to busy dads every week who are doing everything “right” to get in shape. They’re:
If you’re on this frustrating plateau, here are 3 reasons why your hard work may not be paying off like you expect:
Exercise is great for you, but it comes with some unfortunate physical and mental drawbacks. Physically, it increases your hunger, which actively works against fat loss. In order to lose fat, you need to eat less. But eating less becomes nearly impossible when you’re hungry because hunger drives us to eat. You only have so much willpower when you’re hungry.
Furthermore, exercise drives hunger in a linear fashion: the longer and harder you train, the hungrier you get. Without a proactive nutrition strategy, daily workouts will force you to overeat whether you intend to or not.
Mentally, it’s easy to justify the extra calories of a reward treat, a fat-laden comfort meal, or extra servings for “doing things right.” That mental switch can often more than counteract the training you just put in.
Not only does exercise drive up your appetite, but it also burns surprisingly few calories. This makes it incredibly easy to eat back everything you just burned.
Look at the numbers:
Now look at how quickly you can replace those calories:
You simply cannot out-train a bad diet. It’s too easy to out-eat your workouts.
Fitness marketing sells the myth that workouts directly melt body fat. Programs routinely advertise "fat-burning workouts" promising to "shred body fat fast."
That isn't how physiology works. While Zone 2 cardio or walking relies on fat as a primary fuel source during the activity, using fat for fuel during a workout does not equal total-body fat loss.
Overall calorie balance dictates fat loss: calories consumed versus calories burned. Exercise burns total calories, regardless of whether they come from stored fat or carbohydrates. This could lead to body fat losses, but only so long as you eat less than you burn each day. As I’ve already emphasized, it's almost impossible to eat less than you burn if you’re relying on exercise to lose fat.
Don't misread any of this as "exercise doesn't matter." It matters enormously, just not for fat loss.
First, training is essential for building muscle, increasing strength, and preserving lean tissue. No diet alone can accomplish that.
Second, regular exercise drives profound health benefits that have nothing to do with the number on the scale. Exercise directly:
Exercise for health, for strength, for ability. Just don’t exercise solely for fat loss.
Working out every day is straightforward. Eating well every single day is complex. Business travel, client dinners, family schedules, office snacks, and late-night cravings constantly disrupt your routine.
To make matters worse, most dads try to fix this with extreme measures: restriction, fad diets, and 30-day challenges. The weight comes off fast, but it rebounds just as quickly because the approach isn't sustainable.
